Research Update for Professionals: What's New with Teens and their Families?

This course for family professionals covers important topics including defining normal teen development; teens in families, parenting styles and parent-child relationships. Here's what participants said:

In 2004 and 2005 over 160 Minnesota professionals participated in this course in 11 workshops.

  • 88% said the information presented was useful or very useful in their work with families.
  • 82% reported that based on their experience they would participate in another research update.
  • The quantity of resources provided, the high quality of group discussion and the new research presented were considered the most useful aspects of the workshop.

Of 20 participants in a pilot online version of this course:

  • 85% said the course caused them to think in new ways
  • 95% said that they learned something new from the materials
  • 95% reported they would participate in another research update.

Take and Teach CD Lessons Flying Off the Shelves
We recently developed Take and Teach lessons for parents on bullying, peer relationships and teen decision making. Each single-topic CDs includes a facilitator guide, background, parent handouts and activities, resource list, and suggestions for group facilitation and presentations.

A survey of parent participants showed that:

  • 90% in sessions on Bullying "learned something new."
  • 100% in sessions on Peer Relationships said the lesson "caused them to think in new ways about the issues their teen may be facing."

The most useful thing parents learned from the Decision Making lesson were:

  • "How different teens think and process what we (adults) take for granted."
  • "Teen decision making is a lot different than I thought."

In just three months, the CDs have sold out and needed to be restocked. One Extension Service purchased over 100 of each topic for their staff.
